Health and Social Care

Interested in studying Health and Social Care?

Uniquely, we offer Health and Social Care courses to Year 9, 10, 11 and Sixth Form students in our new, state-of-the-art HSC Suite. Our courses are suitable for students who wish to progress into careers in the Health Care and Social Care sectors, such as: nursing, radiographer, physiotherapist, social work, paramedic, care work, therapist, health and nutrition. We build understanding of the requirements and challenges of working in a range of settings, with a particular focus on communication, building relationships, equality, diversity and health & safety.
Furthermore, students will learn how to develop a ‘person-centred’ approach to care. Our young people have opportunity to complete care certificates that are recognised by employers (such as NHS). We want to inspire them to consider higher education, apprenticeships and careers in our local community.

Curriculum – Health and Social Care

Key Stage 3 (Year 9)

  • All Year 9 students will follow a course in Health and Social Care alongside the core curriculum.

Key Stage 4 (Years 10 & 11)

  • Health and Social Care OCR Level 1/Level 2 Cambridge National (equivalent to 1 GCSE)
  • GCSE Sociology
  • GCSE Psychology
Key Stage 5 (Years 12 & 13)
  • NCFE CACHE Level 2 Extended Diploma in Health (teaching from September, 2025)
  • T Level Health – Therapy Teams

Health and Social Care Facilities

In June 2023 our new Health and Social Care Suite was officially opened by Sir Mike Tomlinson and Rob Butler MP. We are very proud to offer the best HSC facility in any school in the area. It was designed with guidance from partners in the Healthcare, Social Care and Higher Education sectors to ensure that our students get an outstanding learning experience. The professional environment and technical equipment means that students get the chance to apply their learning in realistic practical settings. We also want our young people to feel familiar with facilities and resources once they reach their chosen employment sector.
The main areas in our suite are:
  • Hospital Ward
  •  Reception and Nurse Station
  • Assessment, Triage and Reablement area
  • Home Area, with kitchen, bathroom, lounge and bedroom

Who is right for the course?
