Network Rail visit to talk to students about careers and apprenticeships

At the start of this term, Bucks UTC students were visited by Network Rail, the organisation that owns and manages the infrastructure of most rail networks throughout England, Wales and Scotland.

They provide jobs to 34,000 people and they actively seek to take on apprentices, in January 2016 they announced that 150 apprenticeships were up for grabs.

“Bringing bright, young talent with fresh thinking, enthusiasm and dedication to our 35,000-strong team is a critical part of how we will deliver our Railway Upgrade Plan and make our railway bigger and better as it becomes ever increasingly busy.”
Mark Carne, Chief Executive of Network Rail

Network Rail sent in three employees from to talk to our Construction students about careers and apprenticeships within Network Rail. Our Construction students split up into three groups and spent time with one Network Rail representative at a time before moving on to the next one, getting an insight into three different job roles.

Wendy Welsh, Air Operations Manager, was one of the reps talking to the students. Wendy began her career at Network Rail as a signalwoman in North London. Moving through other frontline roles, Wendy gained a significan’t amount of hands-on experience, taking her to her current role. During her career, Wendy has been responsible for delivering business strategies to improve safety, performance and efficiency.

It is estimated that the UK engineering sector needs over 2 million workers in the next 5 years to meet the demand of rail development projects. By coming to Bucks UTC, students can gain the skills they need to successfully move into this industry and, possibly, start a lifelong career.
